— Вольная борьба (МС);

— САМБО (КМС);

— Кёкусинкай Каратэ (3 Дан) (с 85 по 89 год обучался у М. Ойямы);

— С 89 года занимался Айкидо в школе Стивена Сигала «Тэн Син Бугэй Гакуэн»;

Marcus Vinícius de Lucia

BUGEI world’s only true disposable art

It is my sincere belief that BUGEI is the world’s only true form of disposable art. It exists in a moment. And then it’s gone. For good. Its features are unpredictable a moment before its existence happen. And its features are impossible to replicate of even describe a moment after it’s gone. Because the sense a human being truly needs to appreciate this art – is tactile. And in this case not just the touch, but much more than that. (Hydraulic pressure of blood on the sides of blood vessels as it rushes towards extremities during particular type of exhale will play an integral part if and when – done right) I find it extremely difficult to describe the nature of the sensation with words.  It could be fortunate or unfortunate that it is common for a human nature to judge things by comparison. And the measure of such judgement is a determination of value. What is better Toyota or Mercedes? What is better Chopin or Mozart? What is better Monet or Dali? What is better Tiffany or Cartier? What is better Funakoshi or Kano? Any attempt to evaluate anything artful or artworthy brings it down in rank from art to craft (or sports). Craft (or sports) is always for sale and art never is. Art is something that gives one’s soul such an unforgettable rush (for the lack of better word) that I find impossible to describe. It is so sweet, it is so cool, it is so uplifting it creates such a bliss inside and around one’s soul for a tiny split of a second, that one might think – this is what being right next to God feels like. And then that split second is gone. And one is left with realization that months turning into years of regular hard work and focus while teaching one’s own eye and hand to work in unison to develop such ability to control the immediate surroundings that one has acquired enough skill to create, to master a craft. All that while denying your young self a pleasure to throw or kick a ball to each other with your pals, or go out with a girl of your choosing (LOL! Or should I stay a partner to be politically correct? Not!), or simply lounge around with your feet up with a relaxing volume of pulp. And then years turning into decades of polishing one’s already well developed skills through so much rigorous training that throwing up from just being too tired is a norm approximately twice a week. If it happens more often – then there’s something wrong with your stomach and if it doesn’t happen – then you didn’t train hard enough this week. All that while denying your woman (spouse, partner, whatever) comforts of financially secure home living and suffering all the aspects of her never ending ploy to change you so she could fit you into a “proper acceptable partner” category that she has created in her head. That kind of thing. Was all worth it. That’s how massive is sensation of that split second worth of a rush that one’s soul goes through when the art happens. Then a thought enters one’s head (I’m not necessarily talking about my head. I am just putting into words my sincere belief in how it works in the heads of absolute majority of artists, masters of any art): “Wait a minute! I can do it again! I can experience it again!” And then follow numerous futile attempts at reliving that ultra-elusive split second of a rush. I find that futility to be an elegant proof of God’s sense of humor. For that split second of God-like rush will never happen again unless one adds an equal immeasurable amount of sincere effort to improve one’s own skills. It has to be at least equal and always immeasurable. Or it doesn’t happen. For the most – this is where it ends and here come pathetic substitutes in form of booze and drugs. Anything to dull the senses. To just feel a little less of starvation of now rush-hungry soul that has developed some immeasurable appetite that one’s at a loss to satisfy. Too scared and too lazy to face the fact that now it’s time for more of that rigorous training. Without earthy rewards! The true reward is that split second of a rush that one’s soul can experience. Only now there’s another concern. Not enough time in a lifespan for more of those rushes. Because even when one is not too scared or lazy for more rigorous training now comes the time to contemplate a nature of time. Rigorous training takes time. And a lot of it. (that’s me circa 1998) Years go by. Time to “cheat” if you want to experience that rush again. But how? Well. Your SENSEI has been telling you (well… at least mine was… “Arekusu-san, puriizu go teach!” and I was like “No! SENSEI! I don’t care about that! I need all that for me! Not enough time for me to train!” I was a full blown egoist at the time.) Well, the way to cheat was to start sharing your methods, the way you walk that road (and sometimes you blaze the trail, because the footwork of a person who hadn’t used the chairs unless he really had to while growing up and the footwork of a person who had never sat on the floor while growing up, are too different to have reasonable amount of bases for comparison. And the task of simply imitating proper feet position for a correct stance becomes gargantuan. For the requirements of the art, or even a craft. For the purposes of fun and recreation this task is so small — it’s virtually non-existent. LOL!). It takes some time to understand the importance and the works of proper “cheating” technics on a way to a next happenstance of experiencing that elusive split-second rush for one’s soul. Couple of futile attempts here and there. Knowingly hopeless, hence particularly pathetic. And then it comes in. Full force. The visible and unmistakable trail towards new level of that split second of art-produced and art-induced rush (I am beginning to hate this term for its weakness to even begin to describe the essence of what I am writing about). And while It becomes obvious that lots and lots of hours of rigorous training will still be required, it becomes equally as obvious that this time the experience is pretty much guaranteed and no longer elusive. And the conditions of achieving it are in fact reasonably well within reach. Share the way! Share the road! And most importantly – share your own shortcuts towards the method of your art! (the art of your choosing. Since I had mentioned God’s sense of humor it should involve a healthy dose of sarcasm. So I should really say “the art you are stuck with”.) If you are lucky enough to be there when one of your students gets his (or her) first experience of that rush, then certain phenomena occurs. Not only you get to experience your own rush, but the rush you are experiencing is tenfold more powerful. And at that very moment another realization strikes. God not only has a sense of humor, but he has a sense of fairness as well. That stems from understanding that now you possess a recipe to have many rushes like that quite often. Through your students. And now back to God’s sense of humor again. OK! So now it is obvious that this ever so elusive rush is still available. And it is basically clear what needs to be done to achieve it. I will say again: share your own shortcuts towards the method – is the key to a real “tenfold rush experience”. But since we’re talking about an art and not a craft – than we are expected to understand – that for the art – the margins are tighter. Every fraction of an inch counts. And every student has different length measurements for each one’s legs, arms, fingers. For every bone. Height, weight, lungs volume, total reaction time difference between left and right eye. Which one is dominant? Who is ambidextrous? Etc. So now in order to reach that rush that has just became elusive again it becomes important to study each student very thoroughly in order to make sure that he or she will be successful in going through your shortcut towards the method. And there is a very dangerous temptation here! Which is to offer following in your own footsteps. It is hard for students, beginners to understand that it is impossible. The shoe size is different. The legs are different in length. The height is different. So – it is impossible. But the students don’t realize that. So they don’t think so. They stubbornly want to do what teacher does and not what teacher says. And the students are grown and formed humans who are opinionated and stubborn. And think of themselves as free people who are free to make their own choices. Each one of them has done reasonably well in life exercising the freedom to follow advice of their preference and ignoring advice that they didn’t like for one reason or another. Their current overall success in life is blinding to certain extent, just as I have been blind when contradicting my sensei and refusing to “go teach”. That becomes a paradox. You understand that the only way for you to experience that sweetest rush on earth you need to show the quickest way possible to the simpler form of super-sweet rush to someone else and hopefully be present when he (or she) gets there. Be too hasty and the student will “miss the mark” so to speak. Be too slow and you may not live long enough. And the students are always lazy and misguided and prone to mischief of most ridiculous nature no matter how devoted they are. Just like I was. So God forbid you(me)’ll be careless enough to introduce into your student\teacher relationship any additional destabilizing element. I had found very quickly and very early that one of such destabilizing elements is money. Especially in modern capitalist world. Once money is changing hands than payer becomes a client and payee becomes a service provider. Which to me is a direct contradiction to teacher\student relationship paradigm – the way I see it. I have heard a story or two about exception to this rule. But those are mostly medieval or renaissance stories. Well, maybe one or two — from the Orient. And there are not many of those. Nowadays the most sincere and devoted students no matter what background they come from, with extremely rare exceptions, are hindered by the way they look at money as the universal measure of value. They have absorbed such attitude towards money when they were growing up. At school and sometimes at home they are taught that way. Their universal understanding of things about money is such that it turns their attitude into an impossible obstacle for their teacher\student relationship to become a necessary media for transferring necessary martial art skills from a teacher to a student. Thus making it impossible to learn effectively and achieve enough skill to master the very heights and intricacies of the art. So, no lower level rush for the student and no super rush for the teacher. Just some profit for the teacher usually in the amount that normally isn’t worth the effort. (Here I am trying to explain one of the main reasons why I have never ever charged money even from people I don’t like – for practicing together). With years of chasing that magic dragon – the elusive super-rush of being one with your art for the blissful brief moment of it’s existence, comes experience. Experience how to separate promising students from hopeless wannabes. How to tell the difference between them. How to see the value in presence of those hopeless wannabes at least for the promising students. Experience in categorizing the students by type. And your collection of protocols grows significantly each year. Protocols on how to share your shortcut to the method more effectively with each particular student depending on category of each student’s personal aptitude. The only analogy I can come up with is just like in intimate personal life one needs to pay a lot of tender care and devotion into finally, after a lot of practice — getting one’s lover (partner) to function in unison with oneself to achieve the mutual climax (hardly ever of the same magnitude but hopefully similar enough). And that requires a lot of study of one’s partner’s body, it’s movements, it’s reacting patterns and peculiarities. By the same token it takes similar amount of efforts and study about each student’s specifics of body measurements like height and weight and length and dexterity of his(her) extremities just to get an idea on how they move and how they react and what to do with each one so they would start developing those skills that would lead them to a chance to acquire necessary skill that might one day make the art happen thus helping them experience what you’ve experienced and by being on the same wavelength so to speak – their climactic art-produced and art-induced rush will without fail become your climactic rush. And the realization that it was you who made that happen will make your rush tenfold powerful. But much like with intimate personal life. Even getting there produces tremendous amount of pleasure. So that awaiting pleasure is so attractive that having to grunt and sweat during strenuous exercises and in uncomfortable body positions. And roll on various hard surfaces and make your body parts come in contact with hard objects repeatedly until they bleed sometimes. And then repeat before having a chance to heal. And more discomforts of getting up too early for an extra practice in the morning. And having to hide multiple bruises from people you know. All that is still preferable to not having that pleasure in one’s lucky artist’s life. That is why I care so much for my students. They are my instruments to reliving the unbelievable climax, the rush of the moment when the art happens. I have screwed up. After losing a battle of many years for the life of my mother I have allowed myself to dull my pain through the usage of painkilling methods I should have stayed away from. I have lost control of my life and I have let my students down. I was a disappointment to them. From the time of my mother’s death in February 2010 till somewhere in late summer of 2012 when my wife has started turning around the tides of her battle for my survival I experience rather severe memory lapses. By the very end of 2012 I have started regaining consciousness and thus finding myself in a very unacceptable condition for the martial artist. And with my wife’s help I have started the road back one step at a time. I have published the article “AIKIDO returns, 2013”. And by August 2013 the son of my old student has been already receiving training at my home. And then my house has burned down in January 2014. And again another segment of the road back to normality. Very slow. Step by step. By the end of March 2016 I had started to restore normal training regiments with students from around the globe flying in to live in my house and train. Between March and April of 2016 I had students from China, Cabo Verde, Russia and Estonia (and USA of course, both California and Pennsylvania) stay and train at my house. And then some of the stained past has caught up with me again.
